Interesting facts about Euro 2012 (warning not actually that interesting)

  • So far only one penalty has been given at these Euros. That was awarded in the Poland v Greece game where Giorgos Karagounis missed against substitute keeper Przemyslaw Tyton
  • There has not been a single 0-0 draw.
  • Mario Gomez has only been in possession of the ball for 22 seconds in total and has scored 3 goals.
  • Only one-direct free kick has been scored, by Andrea Pirlo for Italy against Croatia.Ā 
  • There have only been two red cards awarded and they both came in the first match, Poland v Greece. One to Polish keeper Wojciech Szczesny and Greece’s Sokratis Papasthathopoulos.
  • Cristiano Ronaldo has had 13 attempts on target and scored 2 goals.Ā 
  • Russia’s Aleksander Kerzhakov has had 11 shots off target. He is the first player to have 7 shots off target in a single match. Their first match against Czech Republic.
  • After Sweden were knocked out Zlatan Ibrahimovic was asked who thought would win the Euros and he replied with: “I don’t give a shit. I’m going on holiday.”
  • Holland who have Robin Van Persie and Klass-Jan Hunterlaar who scored 30 and 29 goals in their respective domestic leagues only scored 2 goals. One more than Ireland.
  • The Czech Republic are the only team in Euro history to top a group with a negative goal difference.
  • To date there have been 54 goals scored in 20 matches. That works out to 2.7 goals per-game.
  • This is the last Euros that will have 16 teams. UEFA has decided to increase the number of teams to 24 at the next edition in France. I think that’s a major shame, I think the tournament is perfect the way it is.
