A waste of money?

I’d be interested to know what Real Madrid fans think of new signing Fabio Coentrao. The former Benfica left back was signed for a huge fee believed to be in the region on €30million. While I believe Madrid could have used some strengthening in the left back department, €30m seems like a lot for a left back. Especially when they have a full back in the shap of Marcelo who had a fantastic season for them. The Brazilian would be expected to be first choice but with a transfer fee so large, Coentrao would have to start.

I’m sure Benfica pushed up their evaluation of Coentrao when they knew Madrid were interested. But paying so much for the Portuguese full back would only send out a message to other clubs ie Santos, that their players are worth more then double that fee. Madrid would have been better off trying to sign a squad player to add cover for Marcelo. Even Gael Clichy would have been a better option as he only commanded a £7m fee from Arsenal. Maybe John Arne Riise who only had one year left on his contract with Roma to help bridge the gap till Coentrao’s contract ran down.

The money could have been used more wisely in signing a new striker. Which Mourinoho seemed so addament was needed for his side last season. I imagine a number of players will leave Madrid in order to fund new signings. So don’t be suprised if Marcelo is linked away at some point during the season.
