It is being reported today that up to five clubs have met Santos release clause for their player Neymar. The five clubs are said to be Real Madrid, Barcelona, Manchester City, Chelsea and Russian side Anzhi Makhachkala. The fee is said to be €45million (£40.3million). If this is true then this is, in my opinion, truly insane. However talented the 19yr old is, he is untested at the highest level and is still very young. For clubs like Chelsea and Man City they should be very cautious about buying the talented Brazillian. As history shows South Americans do tend to struggle in the premier league eg Juan Sebastian Veron, Robinho and Kleberson. Here is a look at the five clubs linked with the Brazilian wonder kid.
Chelsea seem very determined to capture Neymar after failing to secure his services last year. However, I’m sure new Chelsea boss Villa-Boas would prefer the money be invested elsewhere. As there are many aging legs in the Chelsea squad. But if Drogba is moved on then another striker would be required. It would also add some flair to their play.
Barcelona does not seem like a likely destination for Neymar. The club are already pursuing Cesc Fabregas and maybe Alexis Sanchez if you believe the rumours. If they did sign him it would purely be a luxury signing as I don’t see Neymar displacing Messi or Villa or even Pedro as the first choice attackers in his first season. They already have a lot of talented youngsters coming through, like Thiago who has impressed at the U21 European Championship, who’s progress may be hampered by a signing like Neymar.
Real Madrid is no real surprise. Although Jose Mourinho has already been active in the transfer market picking up a number of low profile players, the club would still like a galacticos signing to fit in with their glamor club image. If he did arrive it would cast some doubt over the future of Benzema. The favourites in my opinion.
Manchester City are linked to every big signing. If you believe all the transfer rumours then Man City are going to spend over £200 million. Also it would seem they have no strategy at all in their player purchases and just want any player that any other of the big clubs are linked with. However other clubs may just be mentioning that Man City are interested in their player to try and push up the transfer fee. I think the whole Robinho saga may put Man City off Neymar.
Anzhi Makhachkala are the outsiders of the five clubs. The Russian club has the backing of Russian billionaire Suleyman Kerimov and already boast a number of Brazilians in their squad. The most notable being Roberto Carlos. The club will be hoping the large financial backing of their owner and there current Brazilian contingent will help them seal the deal. If Neymar did chose to go to Russia it would be a dramatic change for the tropical weather of Brazil. Something that I’m sure will hinder any chance of a move.
