The rumor mill has been in over drive the last two days with talk that Chelsea have appointed a new manager. Andre Villas-Boas of FC Porto. The young manger’s recent record is impressive. Winning the Portuguese league, ending the season undefeated. Winning the Portuguese Cup with a 6-2 win over Vitoria de Guimaraes. Also victory over fellow Portuguese side Braga in the Europa League Final 1-0. All this in his first season in charge. He has been labeled the next special one due to his obvious comparisons with his former mentor Jose Mourinho. Andres was part of Jose’s backroom staff at Chelsea and Inter Milan also working as part of his scouting network. He was also invited to work as a trainee with FC Porto’s youth-team coaches by manager Sir Bobby Robson. He has attracted a large amount of attention in a short space of time and was always going to be linked to clubs during the silly season. Inter Milan were even said to be interested but this was dismissed by Inter’s president. However it would seem Chelsea have chosen to believe the hype and attempt to activate his £13.2million release clause. Here is a link trying to explain why Chelsea are so keen on the young Portuguese manager: http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/blog/2011/jun/20/andre-villas-boas-chelsea-manager
Andres is only 33yrs old, the same age as Didier Drogba and Frank Lampard so it would be interesting to see if he would be able to control the large ego’s in the Chelsea dressing room. I don’t doubt that Andres must be an extremely talented manager, yet I do feel Abramovich has jumped on the band wagon too quickly. It has been plain sailing so far for Villas-Boas, it would have been interesting to see how he handles it when his side runs into some trouble. His second season at Porto would have been the real challenge for him, as clubs would have seen his tactics and tried to combat them. He would no longer have the surprise element on his side. I was looking forward to seeing his Porto side in next season’s Champions league. Hopefully that side won’t be dismantled if Villas-Boas does leave. Players like: Hulk, Falcao, Joao Moutinho and Ruben Micael would all have clubs sniffing around them.
Abramovich is not the most patient owner in the world so he may expect the same amount of success straight away. That would be unreasonable but in the crazy world of football don’t discount anything.
